Has President Trump earnestly reached out to Black voters or are the Democrats right in their labeling Trump as a racist?
This seems to be a high-stake concern amplified by Joe Biden’s statement, “if you vote for Trump you aren’t Black”. Why are the stakes high? For the Democrats to win they need both a high turnout of voters and in particular a high turnout from African Americans who are in a position to return them to the white house.
For Trump and the Republicans having a reasonable number of blacks either stay at home or cross over from the Democrats, could sway the election. To have large numbers both stay home or cross over would all but hand the election to President Trump.
All things being equal, White Liberals vs White Conservatives, Blacks are in a position, more so than any group to be a deciding force. With that said, trying to determine what demographic of Black voters will lead is uncertain. Seniors and those who are 45 or older tend to be most consistent and reliable voters. those groups also outnumber the other age demographics when bracketed.
There is a sense of concern as to whether the Democrats have rewarded their most loyal constituent over the past 20 years. There is a fair concern they have been taken for granted. Resources which should have been targeted to their issues, have been spread unfairly thin as the Democrats have preferred to support illegal immigrants and promoted Hispanic concerns. Candidate Trump was able to parlay that dissatisfaction into Black voter apathy, perhaps costing Hillary the election.
Obamas legacy for instance targeted “Dreamers” While the Democratic congress lobbied for a path to citizenship other than the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) which annually gives nearly 700k. Black, who are generational citizens claim heritage to this country have found that voting Democrat does not equate to the monetization of their vote.
Black leaders are not able to get needed resources to their communities. And when they are those resources are thinned, being shared with democrats preferred charitable causes. This has left a huge void in the African American community. Moreover, Black leadership is not necessarily a barometer of what black voters will do. Many Black leaders are not leaders at all but are propped up, chosen by special interests. Like the Marijuana industry who finances Kamala Harris of California and Cory Booker of New York.
President Trump has been making inroads with the Black communities. Some Elected Democrats have been punished for publicly thanking Trump for his efforts to open the prisons, restore voting opportunities to those released. He is also credited with getting Black unemployment down to historic lows. With the First Step Act Trump signs a bill that would reduce sentencing for nearly 60k prisoners in the upcoming years, 31k were schedule for release.
While the Democrats are calling him racist and disingenuous, more African Americans are looking at the results which is something the Democrats have been unable or unwilling to deliver.
President Trump is very much aware of this sore spot. Biden apparently racist remark “if you vote for Trump you aren’t Black” was intended fluff. It came across as condescending and empty. It provided no substantive reason why blacks should vote for Biden and is insulting. What would be more insulting would be to give us a figure head of a black vice president in lieu of results.
While some of the media are lobbying for a black women Vice President, that would have zero impact on much needed community influence. Having another Black figurehead is more fluff no substance. Ironically, as dire as the economic circumstances are in the Black community, there is a voice that emanating from certain Black sectors which are asking for the legalization of marijuana. I would imagine with all the crime, drug and poverty oppressing communities, the last thing you’d want is more drugs. That may not be a Black voice at all but the voice of a lobbyist.
If the Democrats expect to have the full impact of Black voters, it would be in their best interest to provide substance and target the Black community. Otherwise it may be four more years of President Trump. Which to Black voters may not be a bad thing.
